---|
Date Added: 14 December 2006
This is an exceptional, competition model of a "Hansa Cog" common to those that sailed in the Baltic. The ship is a whole hull model built to exacting detail to actual ship as best known. The hull was built in four sections and then reassembled inside the bottle. Each section of the hull has individual planking like an original Cog would have had. The ship's deck if fully planked and is accurately detailed with gratings, hatches, windlass, rudder, fife rails, and life boat. The details of the ringbolts , hinges, hoops, bolts, anchor and assorted metal fastenings. The Cog has 3 masts, the foremast, the mainmast ,the mizzenmast and the bowsprit sticking out at an angle of about 45 degrees from the bow. The masts are all made from bamboo. The mainmast has a square mainsail and the foremast has a foresail. Both sails have a black symbol in the center that resembles a bird. In the center of that symbol is a shield that is colored red on the bottom and white on the top. Each mast is crowned with a round bow shaped crows nest. Above that is a banner or pennant that is red on the bottom white on the top. The mizzenmast has a lateen mizzen sail. All sails are made with the stitch and reef lines showing. The sails are made from fine silk. The ship has a somewhat high forecastle and stern castle with wooden railing around both. There are 4 cannons with the barrels shown extending from round gun ports. Two of the guns are in the bow area and two in the stern area. The ship has authentic detailed standing and running rigging. The standing rigging is in black and the running rigging in gray/brown tone. There are shrouds with ratlines going to the foremast and the mainmast. Each shroud line has blocks and main chains. The ship has blocks and tackle like the actual ship and all elements are built to exacting proportion. The hull rests in a cradle in the bottom of the bottle and the bottle sits on decorative metal pedestals mounted on a decorative plinth. The bottle is sealed with wooden stopper with dark patina. It has a nail going through the part inside the bottle making it impossible to remove the stopper. The stand for the Cog was made from deck materials of an old-time steamship. This model was presented as a gift to the Mayor of the City of Lyubek.
