Build the De Steert
-by Frans Dekker
The following is a plan and several pictures during construction for a model of a yacht call "De Steert" which translates to "The Tail." The plan for this model was drawn and built by Frans Dekker. Frans Dekker from Beemster, Holland was commissioned to build this ship in bottle for a friend who owns the original yacht that is 11.5 meters long.
The style of construction is split hull with lower and upper deck built separate to allow it to fit through the neck of the bottle. This is a style used in the construction of anther model by Frans, the "P65" and found under Bottle ID 562. Frans made the hull in 2 pieces that are put them together with 2 small wooden pins. The deckhouse is made of airplane triplex plywood and is constructed as one part so three separate sections were put together in the bottle.
Because this ship had only one sail only one rope had to be pulled to set the rigging. The hull is painted black and the deck in white with accent features in metal and natural wood. A metal railing goes around the entire hull. On both sides of the hull are wale’s or bend’s to protect the sides of the boat. There is a large white deck house made from several pieces There are 9 windows made of very thin triplex and the "glass" is made with thin hard plastic. The yacht has one mast and the flag of Holland flies from the stern of the yacht. The bottle is sealed with a cork and sealing wax and it has a Turk's Head knot around the neck. The bottle rests on a wooden plinth.
