Bottle 501 - Kotter (Cutter) 1790
Date Added: 22 December 2006

This is a model of a 1790 Navy Cutter, also referred to as Revenue Cutters. The ship is built sailing on a fairly calm sea of blue with the ship's wake along the bow and length of the hull. The ship has one main mast and 4 sails with stitch and reef lines showing. The mast is built in two sections and has a crosstree. A Holland pennant flies from the mast flagpole and the flag of Holland flies from the stern rigging. The ship is rigged as a topsail schooner and has accurate standing and running rigging and blocks and tackle. The hull is natural color and the deck has detailed and accurate deck features with light armament typically found on a Revenue Cutter. There is a white life boat mid-hull. The bottle rest on a natural wood stand that cradles the bottle. The stand has a slat with "Marine Kotter 1790" painted on it in white. This was the first cutter built from a drawing of the hull. The artist then assumed that the men on deck were approximately 6 ft tall, and from that measurement he then calculated the length of the hull, the mast and the bowsprit. With an 18th century length to width ratio of 4 : 1), he was able to quickly make a construction drawing. This was his 13 ship in bottle model and took approximately 25 hours to construct.
