This is a model of the Dutch submarine "Tonijn," one of four multi-pressured hulled submarines ordered by the Dutch Navy. It is the only one to survive. The Tonijn is now part of the collection of the Dutch Naval Museum in Den Helder (Holland). The hull of this model was built in one piece and the tower and the mast were made as separate parts. The Submarine is made from lime wood and the sea is made from colored modeling putty. Information about this model came from the Dutch book "Drie-Cylinders Duiken Dieper" (3-Cylinders Dive Deeper) 1992 Van Soeren & Co Amsterdam, ISBN 90.6881.023.5, and the Dutch Naval Museum (Den Helder Holland) http://www.marinemuseum.nl. Henny Fransen, the artist of this submarine in a bottle, served on this boat for almost two years as a wireless operator until he left submarine service in 1974. He boarded her again in 1994 as a volunteer for the naval museum to support and provide the visitors with guided tours and naval history.
