Bottle 919 - HMS Winchester 1822 in a Bottle
Date Added: 06 July 2015

This is a model of the HMS Winchester of 1822 built by B Stratton in an old 13 inch long ornate bottle. The ship is nicely detailed and is shown without the sails flying. A miniature cannon is placed in the neck of the bottle. The HMS Winchester was a 60-gun Southampton-class sailing frigate of the Royal Navy. She was laid down in 1816 at Woolwich Dockyard, and launched on 21 June 1822. Although designed for 60 guns, she and the rest of the class carried 52 guns. From 1831 to 1861 she served in North America and South East Asia. In 1861 she became the training ship Conway at Liverpool, and from 1876 she was the training ship Mount Edgcumbe. She was sold in 1921. The bottle rests on a custom plinth with the neck resting on a carved tail of a dolphin. A wooden banner with HMS Winchester carved in the wood in on the side of the plinth and 1822 is carved on a wooden banner on the end of the plinth. The bottle is signed by the artist B Stratton.
