Bottle 415 - Jesus and the Thieves
Date Added: 15 February 2006

This is an amazing scene of the crucifixion with the three crosses, carved figures of Jesus and the two thieves, and multiple religious symbols in a small bottle. All the carvings and details in the bottle are in natural wood. The crosses are placed in a triangular position to each other. On each cross are carved figures of Jesus and the two thieves. Each figure is carved in a near identical manner. The heads of each figure are very large with facial features carved in relief. The figures have very large noses and detailed eyes, mouths and cheek bones. The figure of Jesus has a large carved crown on his head. The bodies are carved with a loin cloth on each and legs bent at the knees. The arms of the figures are raised in a nearly vertical position next to their heads. Beneath the cross to the left of Jesus is a carved wooden skull. The crosses are glued to a base that is constructed with eight connected legs that are carved on the underside to the curve of the glass bottom. On the front leg is a carved rooster sitting on top of a pole. Behind the rooster and to the right is an unidentified carved pedestal. Behind that is a carved chalice. On another leg is a flail on a long pole. The whips are long thin slivers of wood attached to the pole with wrapped black thread. Behind the flail is a carve pair of wooden pliers. On the opposite side is a long pole with a sponge on top. On the back side is a wooden hammer. There is also a carved hand and wrist with the fingers carved in the wood. A ladder with 7 rungs leans against the back of the cross of Jesus. The is a carve turned pole, perhaps to represent a candle and beside that is a long wooden spear. The bottle is sealed with a long wooden shaft with a wooden peg crosspiece making it impossible to remove the stopper. The top of the stopper outside the bottle is a very ornately carved piece of wood with a round skirt like bottom with deeply cut "X" pattern all around the bottom. The upper part is somewhat of a turban top with deeply cut vertical pattern.
