Bottle 611 - Margie
Date Added: 16 September 2008

This is an nicely detailed war diorama. In the scene is a truly impressive ship model in a bottle, circa 1940's, depicting a military vessel, possibly a battle cruiser, named "Margie." This is an extremely well-made ship about 5 1/2" long sailing on a choppy sea of deep blue/green near to land masses. The ship's hull and deck sides are painted gray. The name "Margie" is on a label and placed mid-ship on the hull. The decks are painted in a red/rust color. The main deck has four large guns; three of the guns have three cannons and one has two. The ship has two main smokestacks, painted gray and highlighted in gold. White smoke made from cotton rises from each stack. On the deck and between the stacks is mounted a biplane. The ship flies a flag from the main tower, possibly American, and a long banner or pennant, as well as another flag from the rigging and a final flag suspended from a pole on the stern of the ship, all pretty well faded from age. Behind the ship are two separate land masses. There are six buildings on the land to the front of the bottle and six buildings on the other island. All the buildings are white with red roofs and many windows drawn on the buildings. There is a hand-painted background depicting a dark blue sky with clouds. Some of the paint has chipped away. On this background is paper cutout of an airplane that appears to be an American fighter jet. The bottle is a London Winery Limited, London, Canada and is sealed with a black metal screw cap. This bottle was made by an unidentified POW who was held in a POW camp in Gravenhurst, Ontario. This person also made bottle ID 477.
