Bottle 742 - Cross and Religious Symbols
Date Added: 24 January 2011

This handmade wooden cross in a bottle has many of the elements commonly found in these religious bottles. The cross rests on a wooden floor made of 3 wooden planks. On top of the cross is a rooster. Below that is a plaque with "INRI" written in pencil. A crown of thorns is attached to the cross at the point where the cross piece joins the upright timber. On the crosspiece is a whip or flail on one side and a hammer and pliers on the other side. Leaning against the cross is a long wooden spear and pole with a sponge on one side and a wooden ladder with 8 rungs on the other. Three nails are attached near the bottom of the upright potion of the cross. On the base are 3 stacked dice. On the back of the platform is a paper label with "C. J. Kurtz," and "1891". This is the name of the maker and the year the bottle was made. The bottle is sealed with a cork with a metal pin extending to the top of the cross. Outside the bottle, the stopper is painted brown with a wax seal on the top.
