Bottle 1074 - MWA Wigwam Camp 4883 in a Bottle
Date Added: 12 February 2020

This bottle contains many wood crafts including a saw horse made with a pair of wooden pliers on each end and a large log across the top. In the log is an Axe and a Mallet with the handles crossing each other and a wedge in the center of the log. The letter "M" is on the mallet, "W" on the wedge, and "A" on the Axe, which stands for Modern Woodmen of America. The year "1906" written on it. In front of the saw horse is a buck saw with a wooden blade. Written on it is the word "Wigwam" across the top, "4883" (Camp Number) across the bottom, and "Camp" across the center support. There is a wooden base with a long carved wooden support with a brown thread wrapped around it. On the end of the support is a carved fan with interlocking blades. The fan has 20 blades and is approximately 3 inches wide and almost completes a full 360 degree circle. A red thread around each blade of the fan. The bottle is sealed with a wooden stopper with a brown tassel suspended from the center. There is a curved wooden cross piece making it impossible to remove the stopper going through the wooden stopper. A red tassel is suspended from each end of the cross piece. Although the makers name is unknown, this bottle was likely made by someone associated as a forester with the Modern Woodmen of America, Camp Wigwam 4883 in 1906. Modern Woodmen Camp 4883 was chartered on July 12, 1897, in Quenemo, Kansas. It was known as the Wigwam Camp. Camp 4883 was dissolved on January 26, 1955. Its five members transferred to Camp 499 located in Ottawa, Kansas. Modern Woodmen of America does own a similar bottle in its historical collection that is for Park Camp 157 (Atlantic, Iowa). It is also dated 1906.
