Bottle 868 - Nao Santa Maria |
---|
Date Added: 27 October 2013
This is a model of a Nao, perhaps the Santa Maria, build in a bottle by Jonny Reinert. The ship has wonderful and very accurate standing and running rigging. There are shrouds with ratlines and blocks are used throughout the rigging. The hull is wonderfully detailed in natural wood and there is wooden railing in the bow and a raised stern with wooden railing. There are three masts, a mainmast, a foremast, and a mizzenmast. There are 4 sails attached to these masts. Each mast carried one large sail. The foresail and mainsail are square with a large Portuguese red cross in the center. The sail on the mizzen is a triangular sail known as a lateen mizzen. The ship has a smaller topsail on the mainmast above the mainsail. In addition, the ship carries a small square sail, a spritsail, on the bowsprit. A flag flies from the top of two of the masts. The deck is planked and the deck features are accurate to an actual Nao. The ship in bottle is signed and has the edition number of 50/3.
