Date Added: 15 August 2010

Large antique light bulb, measuring 9 inches in length. Bulb is 4 inches in diameter. Maker: Unknown Age: c. 1920 Origin: Unknown. Diorama is similar to many ships in bottle made by German Prisoners of War during World War II; however name on ship model (Graham Land) suggests connection to British Royal Navy. Graham Land is a portion of the Antarctic Peninsula, named after Sir James R. G. Graham, First Lord of the Admiralty at the time of John Biscoe's exploration of the west side of Graham Land in 1832. It is part of British Antarctic Territory. Graham Land is the closest part of Antarctica to South America. Name on model inside bottle suggests it could have been made by a sailor in the Royal Navy who was stationed in Antarctica. Patina of everything inside bottle suggests the ship in bottle was made c. 1920. From the collection of R Michael Owens (Rmyklo)
