Bottle 748 - Worner Crucifixion Scene
Date Added: 04 April 2011

This is a very old and rare crucifixion scene in a bottle made by the renowned Carl Worner in approximately 1890. The scene depicts Jesus and the two thieves hanging on crosses. The bottle also contains many symbols and references to the crucifixion. Jesus and the two thieves are carved in wood and have hand drawn faces. Each are wearing a loin cloth made from tin foil. The crosses of the thieves have very narrow crosspieces and their arms are in a nearly upright position. The cross holding Jesus have a very wide cross arm and Jesus' arms are spread considerably more than the thieves. The crosses are carved with interesting shapes and are highly decorated with drawings and paintings. There are two separate bases joined buy a narrow piece of wood in the center. The main base holds the crosses and on the end is a long pole with a sponge with a pair of pliers in front, and on the other side a spear with a mallet in front of it.. A ladder with 8 rungs and a flail are mounted right behind the cross of Jesus. The second base is curved to fit the contours of the bottle. Like all pieces in the bottle it is decorated with painted symbols. Mounted to this base is a shovel and a pick. In the center are three stacked dices with a carved roster on top of the dice. The small piece of wood joining the two bases has a large carved altar with a chalice on top. An axe leans to one side and a saw leans the other direction. On the back of the main base is the signature of the artist "C. Worner" written faintly in pencil. The bottle is sealed with a cork.
