Bottle 683 - San Francisco |
---|
Date Added: 29 December 2008
From the Artist, Bill Sheridan: "The model is based on yachts and sailing craft typically found in the San Francisco bay area. My wife and I spent our 25th wedding anniversary in San Francisco during the summer of 2008 and literally saw hundreds of watercraft such as this one sailing in the fresh breezes within the bay area. The bottle was purchased in an antique store in Millerton, NY. It has molded raised letters which say" James J Fox, 225 & 611 Warren ST, Hudson, N.Y.". It was purchased for $25. The construction of the bottle indicates that it was made sometime between 1890 and 1910. The boat is made of aspen with basswood deck and trim. The masts and boom are made from aluminum tube that is .0625 inches in diameter with a .014-inch wall. There is a crewmember on the foredeck folding "flaking" the jib while the skipper and remaining crew handle the sheets in the cockpit. The sloop is sailing on a broad reach flying a red and white spinnaker. The lettering and marking of 'SF 25' on the sails are obviously based on the story. Who says you can't teach an old bottle new tricks?"
