Bottle 558 - Crucifixion Scene
Date Added: 14 March 2008

This is an 1800's scene of Jesus on the cross with numerous religious symbols made by Henry .A. Poole of Reading, PA., and Hampton, VA where he was a resident at the National Soldiers Home. The cross, figure of Jesus and all of the religious symbols built inside are carved from wood and painted gold. The cross is ornately carved and notched on both the main trunk and on the cross arm. Jesus is very nicely carved with His head hung down and his knees are slightly bent with the feet on a foot stand. The hands and feet have nails going though them and a carved wound is in the side of Jesus' chest. Above the head of Jesus is a diagonal cut in the wood with "INRI" written between the diagonal lines. On the cross arm is a hammer mounted on one side and a pair pliers on the other. Under the feet of Jesus are two more diagonal cuts with the letters "IHS" between the lines. The cross sits on a decorative base carved to conform to the curve in the bottom of the bottle. On the right side is an ornately carved pedestal with a piece of metal or foil nearly covering the top. This presumably represents the bag with 30 pieces of silver inside. Next to it is a long pole with a sponge on top that leans against the cross arm of the cross. On the left side is a similar pedestal with a carved roster perched on top. Next to this pedestal is another long pole with a carved spear on top. The bottle is sealed with a wooden stopper, ornately carved with a crosspiece going through a slot inside the bottle making it impossible to remove the stopper. This fantastic piece of older folk art found in Arkansas.
