Bottle 491 - Crucifixion with Symbols
Date Added: 25 June 2007

This is a crucifixion scene with multiple religious symbols built in a small bottle. The scene is built from natural wood. The cross is carved in rounded notches along the upright and the cross arm. Jesus is cut out from paper, perhaps a Holy Card. Above Jesus' head is a paper INRI plaque. On the right side of the cross is a very nicely carved wooden bird. The cross rests on two pieces of wood joined with a lap joint to form a "+." This base sits above a piece of paper covering the bottom of the bottle. On one side of the base is a large urn with a red handle and flowers painted on the front. Outside of the urn are three wooden nails. On the other side of the base is a chalice and outside of it is a pair of pliers. To the front of the base is flail and in front of that is a lantern. On the paper base and between the wooden base pieces is a bag of 30 pieces on one side and a rooster on the other side. In front of the cross and crossing each other is a long spear and an axe. On the back side of the cross is a mallet and a ladder with seven rungs leaning against the cross. There is also a coffin with a black cross painted on the top. The bottle is sealed with a wooden shaft with a wooden crosspiece making it impossible to remove the top. Outside the bottle the shaft has a large carved rounded half circle that caps the bottle. On the base to one side are the letters "BP" and on the other "966." These are probably the initials of the maker of this bottle and the year "1966" it was made.
