Bottle 373 - Yarn Winder
Date Added: 01 October 2005

This is yarn winder or niddy noddy with 3 winders built inside a hand-blown bottle. There is a winder in the base of the bottle, one in the center and one in the top. Each is identically made and has the carved red painted tips which hold the yarn. Attached to the hub of the winders are delicately carved column supports painted in subdued colors of red, yellow and green. The yarn is wrapped multiple times with several wraps of a white thread, then less wraps in a red thread and then the white thread wrapped again like before. The wraps alternate making both diamond and "x" shapes with the thread. There is a wooden shaft that touches the top of the yarn winder holding it into position. Over time, a portion of the shaft has broken free to expose the dowel in the winder that extended into the shaft. The broken pieces of wood are in the bottom of the bottle and this appearance of the bottle or shaft is not negatively affected. There is a tamper-proof cross piece preventing the shaft from being removed. The bottle cap is a cylinder shaped piece of wood a little over one inch long. The bottle is hand-blown and has a pontil mark.
