Bottle 311 - Frankfurt Express in a Bottle
Date Added: 01 October 2005

This is a model of the "Frankfurt Express" from the Hapag-Lloyd lines, Hamburg. The ship was inserted in multiple sections. The bottom of the hull is red and the remainder black. The deck is gray colored and all cargo and cabins are white. There are 6 levels on the main structure. There are numerous post windows and large navigation windows on front of the top structure. There are 2 large yellow smoke stack with black tops and red and white strips around the upper top. There are 2 lifeboats hanging from davits outside the main structure. A yellow radar and antenna tower is on the very top behind the navigation cabin. A similar but much larger yellow tower is placed on the bow of the ship. On it is a British flag. There are numerous deck items on the bow and there are raised bulwarks. A large green anchor hangs from each side of the bow. The name "Frankfurt Express" is painted on each side of the bow. On the stern is the name "Hamburg" on each side. There are also carved out areas of the stern with white posts as separators. The cargo is painted white with carved gray lines separating the many containers. The cargo is raised with metal posts up and down the full length of the cargo. Painted on the mid section of the hull is the name "Hapag-Lloyd." The ship sails on choppy waters and in the water is a red buoy with an 84 painted in white. This is the year this model was made. The bottle is sealed with a cork and on the inside is written the following: "Joh. Lonz 1984 Neuwied." This is the name of the modeler, the year the model made and where he was from. The following information was provided by Herbert Lonz, son of the craftsman of this model. "This model was made by Johann Wilhelm Lonz, who died in November 2003. He was 88 years old at the time of death. He learned this art working with his father on a Rhine ship, and was a seaman and also a ship captain on the rivers in Germany, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Belgium and France. Everything to do with ships became his hobby. He modeled ships and built radio-remote controlled ships. He sold many of his scaled ship models to other people. Each model is unique a required many hours and days of manual work to build. He built his ships in bottles during the last 30 - 40 years." He also made models #307, 308, and 312.
