Bottle 267 - Fans and Ribbons
Date Added: 01 October 2005

This is a very old and very well made model of carved fans mounted to wooden cross-members built in a bottle. In the model are 3 separate fans, 2 in the bottom section and a slightly larger fan mounted in the middle of a top section of wood. The 2 fans in the bottom are mounted on one of the 2 crosspieces of wood secured to the bottom of the bottle used to form the base. These fans are decoratively carved and interlocked with each other. Laced through the fan blades in the middle is a blue ribbon with long lengths wrapped in loops in the bottom of the bottle. The top area of the fans is interwoven with thick strands of silver thread woven between the fan blades. Coming from the other cross piece of wood secured to the bottom are 2 poles extending up to the middle of the bottle where they are connected with another cross piece of wood. The poles are wrapped in the same thick silver thread that weaves through the fans. The crosspiece is decoratively carved with an "X" along the wood and on each end. Rising from this piece is the larger fan. It too has very decorative fan blades interlocked with the one next to it. The top fan is laced with red ribbon and silver thread like the fans in the bottom. Again, the red ribbon extends to the bottom portion of the bottle. Also inside the bottle are 5 pompom type balls of yarn in the center section of the bottle between the top and lower fans. The bottle is sealed with a beautiful wooden stopper with a carved ball on the top and the stopper extends below the neck of the bottle where a crosspiece of notched wood goes through it to create a mystery tamper-proof seal preventing the stopper to be removed. The maker of this model is unknown but many examples of his work are known and are very recognizable. A large number have been found in western New York state.
