Ships, Folk Art, and Whimsey in Bottles

This is a scene of the PEKING being prepared for transport from its long-term berth at the South Street Seaport Museum, Pier 16 in Manhattan, New York, in route to Hamburg, Germany. On Tuesday, September 6, 2016, the PEKING, a four-masted Bark, is loaded on the transport ship Combideck III with tugs to assist. The Caddell shipyard is preparing for the later sea transport of the PEKING. The rig is partially dismantled and the inventory lashed because of the risk of winter storms and strong swell on the Atlantic. The PEKING was built in 1911 by Blohm + Voss in Hamburg and was one of the legendary "Flying-P-Liner" of the shipping company Ferdinand Laeisz. It sailed 34 times around the Cape Horn under its flag. Since 1932 she was a fitted as a training ship named ARETHUSA in the Medway on the English east coast as a floating boarding school and was later sold in 1975 to New York.
