1820 Dutch Smack in a Bottle
Date Added: 26 October 2022
Dutch smack, around 1820. When this ship in a bottle was built in a fermentation balloon with a capacity of 5 litres, the main focus was on the representation of the lee sails. The hull of the ship, divided into four parts, is made of soft abachi wood, held together by four bamboo pins. The anchor chain as well as the bowsprit stay are made of a fine chain also of real (!) 333 gold, the casing of the compass was once a (probably fake) diamond earring. After the hull was reassembled still lying in a bed of peas in the container, it was turned so that the fermenting balloon stood upright again. For later it would not have been possible to turn the ship. Only then did the rigging come behind it separately.
