Spirit of St Louis in a Bottle
Date Added: 27 May 2020
This is a model of the Spirit Of St. Louis built in a bottle. The plane was designed by Donald Hall of Ryan Airlines, on the basis of the Ryan M-1 and M-2, high-wing single-engine engines for the transport of passengers and mail that had met with moderate success in those years. The Spirit of St.Louis in question maintained the general configuration of the series models from which it derived, however, it had a radial engine with 9 cylinders capable of developing a power of 240 HP and reaching a speed of 188 Km per hour. It had a mixed structure in wood and metal with a canvas and aluminum covering, and was equipped with a fixed trolley. Although specially designed for a flight from New York to Paris, it is built in San Diego California, and is flown by a Detroit aviator Charles Lindbergh, he was christened Spirit Of St. Louis as a result of funding from this city. It should be noted that the considerable amount of fuel forced the pilot into an uncomfortable position in a very small cabin and that the flight lasted 38 hours. The original plane is currently exhibited in the main atrium of the National Air and Space Museum in Washington. He was brought to the Smithsonian Institution by Lindbergh himself in 1928.
