This is a highly decorated and very beautiful depiction of the cross of Jesus with numerous religious symbols filling a 6 inch bottle. The cross is made in lap joint fashioned from dowel shaped dark wood with wide gold stripes outlining the edges of the cross and cross arm. All around the cross are approximately 1/16" dots in colors of red, gold, green, and yellow. In the center where the cross arm mounts to the cross is a small doily shaped piece of white paper or linen with a decorative pattern. There is a small curved peg coming out near the top with a crown of thorns hanging from the peg. Above this is a paper "INRI" plaque. On each end of the cross arm is a crooked peg that hold a spear on a long pole on one side and a sponge on a long pole on the other with the pole crossing midway on the length of the poles. The poles are wrapped on the diagonal with thin gold ribbon. The cross mounts on a cross base that sits on a piece of blue fabric covering the bottom of the bottle. On each side of the cross base are carved pedestals with a metal saw extending from the pedestal on one side and a hammer on the other side. On the side with the hammer is a flail on a pole that is decorated like the other poles in the bottle. On the front of the cross base is a large rooster. On the back of the cross is a ladder with 4 rungs. The ladder is decorated like the poles in the bottle and is held to the cross with the same kind of peg holding the other pieces to the cross. The bottle is sealed with a shaft made and decorated like the cross with wide stripes of white and blue paper crisscrossing on the shaft. There is a large curved cross arm that sits on top of the cross and is held firm by the shaft of the bottle. The cross arm is colorfully decorated with dots and diamonds of blue and gold. The top of the stopper is a large piece of dark wood carved like a rounded cone. The cone has a cross on the front, a heart on the back, and fleur-de-lis shapes on the sides. There are also dots around the rest of the cone. According to the previous owner: "The former owner, a family friend (age 73), told me this cross has been handed down four generations on her mother's side of the family and that it dates back at least to the 1890s." The logo molded into the rear face of the bottle reads "STROHMEYER & Co, 565 THIRD STREET, MILWAUKEE." The base reads "W.T & Co." According to the seller "The downtown Milwaukee address (565 Third St.) was razed long ago and developed into a park."
