Crucifixion and Symbols in Bottle
Date Added: 30 March 2018
This elaborate whimsey bottle contains the scene of the crucifixion and more religious symbols associated with it than I have ever seen in a religious bottle. Jesus is very finely and delicately carved from wood and there is an INRE plaque above his head. Among the many symbols mounted to hanging form the cross and the base are a flail, hammer, bag of silver, lantern, pliers, club, chalice, pitcher, roster, spear, sponge, ladder, whipping post, the Shroud of Turin wit the face of Jesus showing, the robe, sword, dice, skull and cross bones, heart, and serpent coiled around the base. Additionally, the tablets of the ten commandments and the flag and symbol of the golden bull are on the rear arms of the base. On the front of the base are a finely carved figure of a man and a woman. The bottle is sealed with a wooden stopper and a wooden crosspiece making it impossible to remove the stopper. On top is a delicate and ornate stopper shaped as an altar with a cross in the center and two turrets on the top with a large steeple like piece with a ball and another cross on it. This bottle was made by the same artist who made Bottle ID 1044.
