Crucifixion Scene with Guards
Date Added: 25 November 2011
This bottle contains a wonderfully made scene of the crucifixion with Jesus on the cross and three sentries standing guard. The cross is ornately made with carved and notched ends, painted silver, on each end of the cross piece and the top of the cross. The cross is in natural wood and there are long areas of gold paint accenting areas of the cross. An "INRI" plaque is near the top of the cross. The body of Jesus is carved in great detail with facial features, and loin cloth shown. His body is painted in silver paint. Toward the bottom of the cross is a carved wooden skull with cross bones painted in silver below it. The cross rests on a base in the shape of a "+" sign that is joined with a lap joint. On two sides of the base are wooden crosspieces also joined with a lap joint. There are three carved Roman sentries. The sentries are very nicely made and are shown with a helmet and a body suit painted in silver and gold combinations. On one side of the cross is an ornately carved stand with a carved rooster pained gold on the top and one of the sentries is in front standing guard. On the other side of the cross is a silver chalice with a second sentry standing guard. The two sentries have one arm extended and are holding a long wooden spear with a silver blade. In the other arm they hold a small, round shield also painted in silver and gold. A third sentry is on the back side of the cross has is holding a long ladder with eight rungs in one arm and a small, rounded shield in the other arm. If front of the cross is a carved sliver-colored pair of pliers on the base with a silver mallet laying across the pliers. The bottle is sealed with a long wooden stopper painted silver. Inside the bottle a crosspiece goes through the stopper making it impossible to remover the stopper. A second peg goes through one end of the crosspiece making it a double locking mechanism. Outside the bottle is a dome-shaped wooden cap in dark wood.
