Johann Wilhelm Lonz was born in 1915 and died in November 2003. He was 88 years old at the time of death. He learned the art of making ships in bottles by working with his father on a Rhine ship. He was a seaman and also a ship captain on the rivers in Germany, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Belgium, and France. Everything to do with ships became his hobby. He modeled ships, ships in bottles, and built radio-remote controlled ships. He sold many of his scaled ship models to other people. Each model is unique and required many hours and days of manual work to build. He built his ships in bottles during the last 30 - 40 years of his life in his town of Neuwied, Germany.
